Silence appears to be the refuge of the wise. Or the hopeless. I do not really know at this point.

When you detach sufficiently, things begin to seem transparent, almost impersonal, as if you are just another agent inside this nonstop system. The world does not hate you or love you. It is simply indifferent.

Some people may associate indifference with some kind of evil meaning, but in its deeper truth, that reflects a misunderstanding of indifference itself. Indifference is just that. It is not good or bad. It does not care, but not because it dislikes you. It does not care because you are no one, in the same way that everyone is no one.

You, your ego, your feelings and desires, your fears and weaknesses, all of it is a story. A story inside your mind. You are constructing this story in real time. And because you are conscious, you are able to observe that story, reflect on it, judge the contents of your mind, and feel as if you are the driver in the seat.

But the reality is that, when you look at the nature of your suffering, the self, the idea of a “you,” your ego, is the basis upon which pain appears.

Some people might read this and think: “But I am not suffering. I am happy.” And that could be true. But at a lower level, most of us are constantly driven by a deep sense of dissatisfaction, of need. Something in the future is pulling us forward. Something in the past may be holding us back. And yet there are people who are happy or peaceful enough that, if you ask them about these sensations, not being fulfilled in the present moment, overlooking it, being subtly unsatisfied even after getting what they once wanted, they may not recognize what you are pointing to.

These people are somehow insensitive, not in the moral sense of lacking sensitivity, but in the sense of not being able to observe the lower-level mechanics of what is happening in their minds. And maybe, if you have a happy enough life, you can spend years finding no point in these kinds of considerations. That is actually fine. You are very lucky if you are not in physical or emotional pain, or trapped in some kind of sustained stressful situation. It is good to be resilient and not suffer much. You may not be looking for a “path to enlightenment,” because you do not see a problem right now.

But this does not mean there is no problem. And it does not mean there could not come a time when you feel overwhelmed or completely crushed by mere existence.

So a lot of what this insight is, and what this kind of introspection looks for, is a form of training for the bad times. You are getting ready for the worst day, or the worst season, of your life.

The issue, or revelation, is that there is no telling what is going to happen to any of us in the future. The only certainty you can aspire to hold is that your mind is all you have. From the point of view of reality and consciousness, your mind is the only thing that is going to be given to you at any moment of your life. The ability to be at peace in the middle of the worst storm, and to enjoy and be present in the bullseye of the party of your life, is what you have in every moment. It is your only tool and your only arm.

There are people who have thought a lot about these issues and discovered that, yes, there are tools and resources worth having at hand when these things happen.

And when you become sensitive to how it is that you suffer, to the underlying mechanics and dynamics of the processes unfolding in your mind, the truth is that there is not that much going on there. It is not that these are novel processes. They can be summarized like this:

Whenever you are suffering, really suffering, you are lost in thought.

That is all. You are thinking. These hits are being shot by your own mind at itself through the automaticity of thinking, without recognizing that you are thinking. You are so deeply invested, so merged, so consumed by the character, that the next thought arises and it seems to be you. More than that, it seems to be what you are.

Because of certain constraints in this process, the sense of locality, the feeling that it is happening “inside you,” the fact that only you are sensing, hearing, or watching these thoughts, and the focus you put on them, you feel like you are the thinker of your thoughts. You feel like the author of them. As if there were a little part of you inside your mind, effortlessly writing this continuous stream of content from who knows where, carrying your attention along with it.

When you look closely at this dynamic, there is an evident paradox. You think you are the author of your thoughts, but from a structural point of view, thoughts appear in consciousness from nowhere. The environment can trigger them: being with someone, a smell, a taste, a song. But at their deepest root, you are not creating them. They simply appear.

To be the author of your thoughts, you would have to think the thought before you think it.

That is where the logic falls apart.

The issue is that being identified with thought carries with it the felt sense that you are the thinker. It creates the illusion of a thinker that is separate from the thought.

For example, if you are reading me now and you somehow do not get what I am trying to say, you might be thinking: “What is this guy talking about? What is he saying?” And that thought, that piece of text that appeared in your mind, simply emerged. Because you are so invested in the attention of your own discourse, it feels like you.

The sense of self is, in part, a product of not seeing thought as thought. It is what happens when a thought arises in the larger landscape of the mind and is not recognized as an appearance.

When you deeply understand this mechanism, at a certain point of practice, you can begin to watch thoughts appear in consciousness without being more identified with the voice in your head than you are with the voice of someone talking to you.

Notice what happens when you understand another person. If you know the language and certain preconditions are met, you decode the sounds or signs the other person emits without any special intention of your own. Understanding simply happens. If you really think about it, you cannot decide not to understand what the other person is saying. Either you know the language and the other person vocalizes clearly enough, or you do not understand. One way or another, the meaning is imposed on your mind.

What is deeply illuminating is that your own thoughts are like this too.

They simply arise. You do not know what you are going to think next any more than you know what another person is going to say next. Your thoughts feel like you in a way that another person’s voice does not, but from a phenomenological point of view they are fundamentally just as surprising, just as novel, just as ungoverned by you.

And once you notice this, you realize that our minds are always like this. They seem familiar, but at every moment it is deeply mysterious how any of this is happening. There is no one in the driver’s seat. There are simply thoughts, sensations, moods, and all the phenomena of conscious life arising and passing away.

The sense that there is a writer of that stream, that there is a rider of the horse, is what it feels like to be thinking without knowing that you are thinking.

But when you can recognize the next thought arising in consciousness, whether through meditation, practiced attention, or the development of sufficient concentration, you find that it becomes harder for classic negative mind states to sustain themselves in the same unconscious way.

Anger, for example, is born again and again inside the mind through thought. If you have a strong practice of mindfulness, and your attention can shine directly on the process of thinking, noticing thoughts as they arise and pass away, then the half-life of these emotions changes. When they are no longer being fed by thought, they often last only seconds. They last only the moment.

And when you cannot do this, when things get out of your hands, it is usually because you are reinforcing the same emotion through a positive feedback loop. Thought feeds emotion, emotion triggers more thought, and the loop keeps rebuilding itself. You are not recognizing the thoughts related to that emotion, so they continue to feel like you.

But when you recognize them, it is like trying to grab sand. They slip away. They stop feeling like you.

Having the skill to drop certain negative emotions because they are not useful, because they are not equipping you with anything that serves a real purpose other than causing suffering, is almost a superpower in this world.

So becoming more and more sensitive to the character of your mind, and to how your thoughts develop, begins to reveal that being lost in thought is not making you happy.

In fact, the moments of life that we identify as peak moments, the ones we want to return to, tend to have this quality of selflessness, of not ruminating. Whether we call it flow, peak experience, or being “in the zone,” these are moments in which, through sports, music, sex, drugs, creativity, work, or something else, the mind becomes fully immersed in whatever is happening.

In those moments, the distance between observer and observed collapses. You are simply in what you are doing.

People are desperate for those moments, and for good reason. But through understanding yourself, you begin to see that this experience is not limited to extraordinary circumstances. It can become available in ordinary life. Not because the self finally gets what it wants, but because, for a moment, the rider is seen through.

And when you look closely enough, you may find that the rider was never there.

El silencio parece ser el refugio de los sabios. O de los desesperanzados. Realmente no lo sé a esta altura.

Cuando te desapegás lo suficiente, las cosas empiezan a parecer transparentes, casi impersonales, como si fueras simplemente otro agente dentro de este sistema que nunca se detiene. El mundo no te odia ni te ama. Es simplemente indiferente.

Algunas personas pueden asociar la indiferencia con algún tipo de significado malvado, pero en su verdad más profunda, eso refleja una mala comprensión de la indiferencia misma. La indiferencia es simplemente eso. No es buena ni mala. No le importa, pero no porque no le gustes. No le importa porque no sos nadie, del mismo modo en que todos son nadie.

Vos, tu ego, tus sentimientos y deseos, tus miedos y debilidades, todo eso es una historia. Una historia dentro de tu mente. Estás construyendo esa historia en tiempo real. Y porque sos consciente, sos capaz de observar esa historia, reflexionar sobre ella, juzgar los contenidos de tu mente, y sentir como si fueras el conductor en el asiento.

Pero la realidad es que, cuando mirás la naturaleza de tu sufrimiento, el yo, la idea de un “vos”, tu ego, es la base sobre la cual aparece el dolor.

Algunas personas podrían leer esto y pensar: “Pero yo no estoy sufriendo. Soy feliz.” Y eso podría ser cierto. Pero en un nivel más bajo, la mayoría de nosotros estamos constantemente impulsados por una profunda sensación de insatisfacción, de necesidad. Algo en el futuro nos está tirando hacia adelante. Algo en el pasado puede estar sosteniéndonos hacia atrás. Y aun así hay personas que son lo suficientemente felices o pacíficas como para que, si les preguntás por estas sensaciones, no estar plenamente realizadas en el momento presente, pasarlo por alto, estar sutilmente insatisfechas incluso después de haber conseguido lo que alguna vez querían, tal vez no reconozcan a qué estás apuntando.

Estas personas son, de algún modo, insensibles, no en el sentido moral de carecer de sensibilidad, sino en el sentido de no poder observar los mecanismos más bajos de lo que está ocurriendo en sus mentes. Y tal vez, si tenés una vida lo suficientemente feliz, podés pasar años sin encontrarle sentido a este tipo de consideraciones. Eso está bien, de hecho. Sos muy afortunado si no estás en dolor físico o emocional, o atrapado en algún tipo de situación estresante sostenida. Es bueno ser resiliente y no sufrir demasiado. Tal vez no estés buscando un “camino hacia la iluminación”, porque no ves un problema ahora mismo.

Pero esto no significa que no haya un problema. Y no significa que no pueda llegar un momento en el que te sientas abrumado o completamente aplastado por la mera existencia.

Entonces, mucho de lo que es esta intuición, y de lo que busca este tipo de introspección, es una forma de entrenamiento para los malos tiempos. Te estás preparando para el peor día, o la peor temporada, de tu vida.

El problema, o la revelación, es que no hay forma de saber qué va a pasarle a cualquiera de nosotros en el futuro. La única certeza a la que podés aspirar es que tu mente es todo lo que tenés. Desde el punto de vista de la realidad y de la consciencia, tu mente es lo único que se te va a conceder en cualquier momento de tu vida. La capacidad de estar en paz en medio de la peor tormenta, y de disfrutar y estar presente en el centro exacto de la fiesta de tu vida, es lo que tenés en cada momento. Es tu única herramienta y tu única arma.

Hay personas que han pensado mucho sobre estos problemas y han descubierto que sí, hay herramientas y recursos que vale la pena tener a mano cuando estas cosas suceden.

Y cuando te volvés sensible a cómo es que sufrís, a los mecanismos y dinámicas subyacentes de los procesos que se despliegan en tu mente, la verdad es que no está ocurriendo tanto ahí. No es que estos sean procesos novedosos. Se pueden resumir así:

Siempre que estás sufriendo, realmente sufriendo, estás perdido en el pensamiento.

Eso es todo. Estás pensando. Estos golpes están siendo disparados por tu propia mente contra sí misma a través de la automaticidad del pensamiento, sin reconocer que estás pensando. Estás tan profundamente invertido, tan fusionado, tan consumido por el personaje, que el siguiente pensamiento aparece y parece ser vos. Más que eso, parece ser lo que sos.

Por ciertas restricciones de este proceso, el sentido de localidad, la sensación de que está ocurriendo “dentro tuyo”, el hecho de que solo vos estás sintiendo, escuchando o mirando estos pensamientos, y el foco que ponés en ellos, sentís que sos el pensador de tus pensamientos. Sentís que sos el autor de ellos. Como si hubiera una pequeña parte de vos dentro de tu mente, escribiendo sin esfuerzo y desde quién sabe dónde esta corriente continua de contenido, arrastrando tu atención junto con ella.

Cuando mirás de cerca esta dinámica, hay una paradoja evidente. Pensás que sos el autor de tus pensamientos, pero desde un punto de vista estructural, los pensamientos aparecen en la consciencia desde la nada. El entorno puede dispararlos: estar con alguien, un olor, un sabor, una canción. Pero en su raíz más profunda, no los estás creando. Simplemente aparecen.

Para ser el autor de tus pensamientos, tendrías que pensar el pensamiento antes de pensarlo.

Ahí es donde la lógica se cae.

El problema es que estar identificado con el pensamiento lleva consigo la sensación sentida de que vos sos el pensador. Crea la ilusión de un pensador que está separado del pensamiento.

Por ejemplo, si me estás leyendo ahora y de alguna manera no entendés lo que estoy tratando de decir, podrías estar pensando: “¿De qué está hablando este tipo? ¿Qué está diciendo?” Y ese pensamiento, ese fragmento de texto que apareció en tu mente, simplemente emergió. Porque estás tan invertido en la atención de tu propio discurso, se siente como vos.

El sentido del yo es, en parte, un producto de no ver al pensamiento como pensamiento. Es lo que ocurre cuando un pensamiento aparece en el paisaje más amplio de la mente y no es reconocido como una aparición.

Cuando entendés profundamente este mecanismo, en cierto punto de práctica, podés empezar a ver los pensamientos aparecer en la consciencia sin estar más identificado con la voz en tu cabeza que con la voz de alguien que te está hablando.

Notá lo que ocurre cuando entendés a otra persona. Si conocés el idioma y se cumplen ciertas precondiciones, decodificás los sonidos o signos que la otra persona emite sin ninguna intención especial de tu parte. La comprensión simplemente ocurre. Si realmente lo pensás, no podés decidir no entender lo que la otra persona está diciendo. O conocés el idioma y la otra persona vocaliza con suficiente claridad, o no entendés. De una forma u otra, el significado se impone en tu mente.

Lo que resulta profundamente iluminador es que tus propios pensamientos también son así.

Simplemente aparecen. No sabés qué vas a pensar después, del mismo modo en que no sabés qué va a decir otra persona después. Tus pensamientos se sienten como vos de una manera en que la voz de otra persona no se siente como vos, pero desde un punto de vista fenomenológico son, fundamentalmente, igual de sorprendentes, igual de novedosos, igual de no gobernados por vos.

Y una vez que notás esto, te das cuenta de que nuestras mentes son siempre así. Parecen familiares, pero en cada momento es profundamente misterioso cómo está ocurriendo todo esto. No hay nadie en el asiento del conductor. Hay simplemente pensamientos, sensaciones, estados de ánimo, y todos los fenómenos de la vida consciente apareciendo y desapareciendo.

La sensación de que hay un escritor de esa corriente, de que hay un jinete sobre el caballo, es lo que se siente al estar pensando sin saber que estás pensando.

Pero cuando podés reconocer el siguiente pensamiento apareciendo en la consciencia, ya sea a través de la meditación, de la atención practicada, o del desarrollo de una concentración suficiente, descubrís que se vuelve más difícil para los estados mentales negativos clásicos sostenerse de la misma manera inconsciente.

La ira, por ejemplo, nace una y otra vez dentro de la mente a través del pensamiento. Si tenés una práctica fuerte de mindfulness, y tu atención puede iluminar directamente el proceso de pensar, notando los pensamientos mientras aparecen y desaparecen, entonces la vida media de estas emociones cambia. Cuando ya no están siendo alimentadas por el pensamiento, muchas veces duran solo segundos. Duran solamente el momento.

Y cuando no podés hacer esto, cuando las cosas se te van de las manos, generalmente es porque estás reforzando la misma emoción a través de un bucle de retroalimentación positiva. El pensamiento alimenta la emoción, la emoción dispara más pensamiento, y el bucle sigue reconstruyéndose a sí mismo. No estás reconociendo los pensamientos relacionados con esa emoción, entonces continúan sintiéndose como vos.

Pero cuando los reconocés, es como intentar agarrar arena. Se escapan. Dejan de sentirse como vos.

Tener la habilidad de soltar ciertas emociones negativas porque no son útiles, porque no te equipan con nada que sirva a un propósito real más allá de causar sufrimiento, es casi un superpoder en este mundo.

Entonces, volverse cada vez más sensible al carácter de tu mente, y a cómo se desarrollan tus pensamientos, empieza a revelar que estar perdido en el pensamiento no te está haciendo feliz.

De hecho, los momentos de la vida que identificamos como momentos cumbre, aquellos a los que queremos volver, tienden a tener esta cualidad de ausencia de yo, de no estar rumiando. Ya sea que lo llamemos flow, experiencia cumbre, o estar “en la zona”, estos son momentos en los que, a través del deporte, la música, el sexo, las drogas, la creatividad, el trabajo, o alguna otra cosa, la mente se vuelve completamente inmersa en lo que está ocurriendo.

En esos momentos, la distancia entre observador y observado colapsa. Simplemente estás en lo que estás haciendo.

La gente está desesperada por esos momentos, y con buenas razones. Pero a través de entenderte a vos mismo, empezás a ver que esta experiencia no está limitada a circunstancias extraordinarias. Puede volverse disponible en la vida ordinaria. No porque el yo finalmente consiga lo que quiere, sino porque, por un momento, el jinete es visto a través.

Y cuando mirás lo suficientemente de cerca, tal vez descubras que el jinete nunca estuvo ahí.
